Now that’s a steak and cheese.
Dedham-based D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches proved Philly has nothing on Massachusetts with the introduction of its new One Pound Steak and Cheese sub this week.

It’s not small, it’s not medium, it’s not large, it’s “extra, extra, extra” large. The $9.99 sub includes one pound of USDA choice beef that’s grilled and piled on a toasted roll with American cheese.
The steak and cheese sub has long-been D’Angelo’s most popular menu item, with 3.5 million sold annually at its 190 restaurants.

“Our guests look for hardy, indulgent items,” said Michael McManama, senior VP of brand development. “We have a guest advisory board, and they loved this idea. Although many consumers look for healthier items, this is a time - during the winter - when they look for comfort food.”

Loaded with 1,010 calories and 50 grams of fat, the sub is not for the diet-conscious. Though it could be worse. A Triple Whopper with cheese at Burger King has 1,230 calories and 82 grams of fat.

D’Angelo created its beefy beast for its core steak-and-cheesers: males in their 30s.

“It’s not for everybody because it is a lot of food,” McManama said. “We also offer lighter fare. D’Lite sandwiches are 7 grams of fat or less, and we have a full line of salads.”

Introduced Tuesday, the new sub already has exceeded D’Angelo’s expectations, according to McManama, with each of its restaurants selling three to five a day; numbers forecast to grow on Fridays and weekends.

The new sub will be tested through March. Its popularity will determine whether it becomes a more permanent menu item.

“With the football playoff games coming up, we suggest buying one and cutting it up,” McManama said. “It makes a great tailgating meal or an appetizer during a game.”

Those who indulge in the entire guilty pleasure by themselves can take comfort in one regard: the One Pound Steak and Cheese sub is trans fat-free.
